Paul Levinson-
For me painting is the closest thing to being childlike that I’ve found. Looking at the paintings I did as a child makes me jealous of the freedom and expression that was so natural. As I paint, I’m trying to get back to that place. Bright colors, smearing, layering, removing, putting down lines, I’m working to reveal something new that I haven’t seen before. I cannot compete with the beauty of nature, I strive to create something new and differently beautiful as I work.
Being a little sissy trying to avoid a bunch of bullies I found safety and comfort alone in my room drawing and painting for hours. That time spent alone I found myself more and more attuned to my surroundings and focusing on details. This early observance of detail has stayed with me, shaping not only my art but also my 25-year career as an interior designer in San Francisco.
